BELLA – The Berkeley Laboratories Laser
Accelerator
Certainly one of the most
significant theoretical and practical engineering developments in physics in
the field of particle acceleration, the Berkeley Labs BELLA can accelerate
electrons to unheard of speeds in the unbelievable short distance of a couple meters. Long
gone or soon to be gone are the cyclotrons and other sorts of ring accelerators
as BELLA can perform the same function for less than 5% of the cost of a
traditional ring accelerator. BELLA uses
a terawatt laser and hydrogen plasma to capture electrons in a wave and
catapult them to energies of tens of Giga electron volts. The process known as
Laser Wakefield Acceleration, will be described, along
with the equipment and results of demonstration experiments, in some detail.
